Due to my many responsibilities and certain perceptions about design, my habits as a designer are unique to me. On a day-to-day basis, I do not find myself in places outside of where my responsibilities are. I work for a graphic design company in addition to being a graphic design BFA student, so I frequently find myself checking in at the most important places in my life currently: my work office in Stone Mountain, Georgia, and at the Ernest G. Welsh School of Art and Design building at Georgia State University. I enjoy both of these places because I am around my peers and other creative minds that are familiar with and interested in graphic design. My work is the parent company of a creative company that specializes in commercial photography, and the large prints my company displays on the wall of their commercial photography inspires me. I find that no matter how many times I study the photography, I never tire of the dynamic composition and color pallet.
Certain people in my life, though, I credit with renewing my energy and passion for design. My mom helps keep me focused and motivated because she is GSU Alumni and knows how demanding college can be, but also knows how beautifully rewarding it is. Without her, I know I would not be able to push through some of the sleepless nights I've experienced that are inevitable to the designing process. My dad teaches me about professionalism and working with clients by leading through example; I have always admired my dad's work ethic and the way he presents himself to clients he works with. I love talking to my dad because while my mom helps ground me in the present, my dad helps me see to the future. My cousin, Rhiannon, is a person I find myself checking in with because she herself is a creative professional. Rhiannon is a photographer, and we discuss a wide variety of topics within the art world and certain particulars only found in commercial art and design. In my free time, Rhiannon and I frequent art festivals and exhibits around town, and I really cherish these experiences.
I collect objects that inspire me (for some snapshots of these, reference the previous blog titled "Personal Workspace". I really enjoy the organicness and colors of rocks and polished rocks. Also, I find myself admiring the colored bottles on display in my bedroom window; when the first light of the day shines through the glass, I feel a sense of youthfulness that makes the air I breathe crisp and refreshing.
In regards to my certain perceptions on design, I try not to keep up with design websites because I am not always sure their influence is good when it comes to my personal designs as I try to avoid the influence of trends in art and design. To fuel my creative thinking in a different light, I sometimes browse items for sale on Etsy, a website where artists can sell their creative work. Although Etsy mostly caters to crafts, I enjoy looking at the photographic prints for sale as well as the jewelry and metal-work designs. Etsy is a great place for my inspiration because it inspires me to push my own talents in hopes of one day selling my own work without flooding my brain with trends; I hope to push my own design style so that it stands on its own as "one of a kind".
